Mathematics Optional Strategy by Prakash Rajpurohit (AIR-2)

Made with Remarkable! Mathematics Optional Strategy by Prakash Rajpurohit (AIR-2) Mathematics part-1 Before starting with the strategy I would like to answer a common question: What is the final score vis-à-vis correct attempt? It is true that there is heavy moderation of marks in science subjects especially in mathematics. But despite that it is possible to score very high. I got 390/600 in CSE-2008 and 427/600 in CSE-2009. My final score and correct attempt paper wise is: 2008: Paper I: I got 184/300. Correct attempt was 261/300. Paper II: I got 206/300. Correct attempt was around 250/300. 2009: Paper I: I got 209/300. Correct attempt was 300/300. Paper II: I got 218/300. Correct attempt was 285/300. In the correct attempt I have counted only those answers which are absolutely correct. Paper I is relatively easy so the reduction is huge. Also do not confuse the term scaling down as only multiplication by

Mathematics Optional Strategy by Atul Prakash(AIR-4)

Made with Remarkable! Mathematics Optional Strategy by Atul Prakash(AIR-4) Paper 2 Points to ponder : The syllabus of Paper 2 of Mathematics is slightly tricky when compared to Paper 1, especially due to presence of topics like Algebra and Fluid Dynamics. A general trend in recent times has been the mixing of questions of different topics in all the optional questions. This means that one has to have some degree of acquaintance with all the topics of the paper. For those not very conversant with fluid dynamics, it would pay more to focus more on Algebra and Real Analysis so as to avoid having to select two optional questions from Section II of this paper. I adopted this strategy, having more or less pre-decided to prefer selecting two questions from section 1, giving more emphasis on modern algebra and real analysis. This did not work for me in CSE-2016 though, as questions out of CSE syll

Mathematics Optional Strategy by GSS Praveenchand (Rank-64/UPSC-2018)

Made with Remarkable! Mathematics Optional Strategy by GSS Praveenchand (Rank-64/UPSC-2018) Q. What’s your optional subject and why did you chose it and not something else? My optional subject was mathematics. I have chosen mathematics due to the following reasons During my graduation, I had fair exposure to mathematics. I have benefited from many mathematical techniques during my three years of employment in the private sector. So, as a continuation of that, I opted for mathematics. Q. If a new player wants to pick your subject, would you advice for it or against it? Optional must be selected based on one’s interest and comfort. Just do not choose the optional as someone else scored good marks in that. For example in my case, during my second attempt, I made many calculation mistakes in mathematics and got 263 marks only, due to which I had to contend with 512 rank. Whereas

A large number of aspirants called or messaged me saying that they have decided to or wanted to take Maths and asked me to share my strategy. When I asked them why they wanted to choose Maths, most of them told that it was because of good performance of Maths in recent years. Is Mathematics really performing well in recent years? On the surface it might look that Maths is doing well. This time around 25-30 candidates have got in the range 290-310. But the problem with Maths optional is scaling. Due to scaling (I don’t know how UPSC does it), a very few number of candidates get high and remaining ones get very low. The ones who get high would have obviously done better than the rest. But due to scaling, difference in marks between the highest an

Made with Remarkable! Mathematics Optional Strategy by Anubhav Singh (Rank-8/UPSC-2017) Q. What’s your optional subject and why did you chose it and not something else? Ans:Mathematics was my favourite subject since my schooldays. But this was not the sole criteria on which i decided to take maths as optional in UPSC, I reckoned that this was the subject in which I could score maximum. Along with interest, pragmatism should also inform the choice of optional subject. Q. If a new player wants to pick your subject, would you advice for it or against it? Ans: My considered view is that one should take maths only if he has a strong inclination and background in it. Anyone (and not only IIT grads) can take this optional subject to the above mentioned conditions. One should not be tempted by stellar marks of some successful candidates as there are a lot more candidates consistently scoring low marks.
